Although not required for graduation, two or more years of a foreign language are required by UC, CSU, andmany private colleges for admission. The demand for people who can communicate in an increasingly global economy is growing. In addition to personal satisfaction, second language proficiency can be the determining skill for a job opportunity.

Classes:

FRENCH I A/B Grades 9-12
UC/CSU Approved 10 Credits
This class emphasizes learning to understand spoken French and to express o neself
using simple vocabulary dealing with the family, home, clothing, food, weather and other
subjects relating to daily life. Students will also explore the customs and life-styles of the
French-speaking world.


FRENCH II A/B Grades 9-12
UC/CSU Approved 10 Credits
Prerequisite: Successful completion of French 1 with a "C" grade or better OR
teacher recommendation.
In this class, listening and speaking skills are strengthened as reading and writing
abilities continue to develop. A special emphasis is given to a more detailed study of
the grammatical elements of French.


FRENCH III A/B Grades 10-12
UC/CSU Approved 10 Credits
Prerequisite: Successful completion of French 2 with a "C" or better OR teacher
recommendation.
This course consists of practice in speaking, reading and writing French with increased
emphases on reading of short stories, individual written expression and vocabulary
building. At this level the student will truly begin to be comfortable speaking French!

AVANCED PLACEMENT FRENCH LANGUAGE A/B Grades 11-12
UC/CSU Approved 10 Credits
Prerequisite: Successful completion of French 3 with a "C" or better AND teacher
recommendation.
A college preparatory French course continuing work of an advanced nature in
structured-reading, writing, conversation, and grammatical exercises. This course is
designed to enable qualified students to achieve to the best of their ability on the
Advanced Placement examination in French.


SPANISH I A/B Grades 9-12
UC/CSU Approved 10 Credits
This beginning course relies heavily on an audio-lingual (hearing-speaking) approach.
The areas of emphasis are on an understanding of the spoken language, correct
pronunciation and intonation, development of correct speech patterns, simple dialogues
and narratives, reading and writing of Spanish already heard, and short dictations.
Students will learn to tell the time of day and use time expressions, be able to identify
classroom objects, be able to use simple vocabulary covering the family and home,
clothing, food, and entertainment - all in Spanish!


SPANISH II A/B Grades 9-12
UC/CSU Approved 10 Credits
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish 1 with a “C” or better or teacher
recommendation.
In this course, various aspects of Spanish are increased to serve as a basis for oral
discussion. The areas of emphasis in this course are basically the same as those for
Spanish I with the addition of more conversation, more dictations, and a more detailed
study of the basic grammatical elements of Spanish.


SPANISH III A/B Grades 9-12
UC/CSU Approved 10 Credits
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish 2 with a “C” or better or teacher
recommendation.
This course consists of practice in speaking, reading, and writing Spanish with
increased emphases on reading, writing, vocabulary building, and further study of the
language structure. Students read some cultural material, which is used as a basis for
conversation. Some poetry and short stories will be studied.


ADVANCED PLACEMENT SPANISH LANGUAGE A/B Grades 10 -12
UC/CSU Approved 10 Credits
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Spanish 3 with a “C” or better AND
teacher recommendation.
College preparatory Spanish course, continuing work of an advanced nature in
structure-reading, writing, conversation, and grammatical exercises. This course is
designed to enable qualified students to achieve to the best of their ability on the
Advanced Placement examination in Spanish.

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE I A/B Grades 9-12
UC/CSU Approved 10 Credits
The beginning course teaches communication in sign language through a knowledge of
vocabulary and syntactical principles of American Sign Language. There will be a focus
both on receptive and expressive sign skills. A strong emphasis is placed on values and
beliefs of people within the American Deaf culture. Successful completion of American
Sign Language IA with a grade of “C” or better at the semester is required in order for a
student to continue with American Sign Language IB.


AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE I A/B Grades 9-12
UC/CSU Approved 10 Credits
Prerequisite: Successful completion of American Sign Language with a C or
better.
A continuation of American Sign Language I, this course is designed to further develop
receptive and expressive fluency using more complex grammatical structures and
vocabulary. Successful completion of American Sign Language IIA with a grade of “C”
or better at the semester is required in order for a student to continue with American
Sign Language IIB.
